November 1999 saw the “Free the Law” meeting at Chatham House, St James’s Square, erupt with enthusiasm for a free-to-use website giving intelligible access to all the law possible, as soon as possible.
It happened and now, 5 years on, BAILII is the embodiment of what then seemed too good to hope for, and it's growing all the time.
BAILII is a charity. Its site at www.bailii.org now provides a phenomenal range of materials across these islands and from Europe. Free to use it is, and will always remain; free to run it is not! For a minimum donation of just £15 (and we get more if you will sign the simple Gift Aid form), please join us to celebrate BAILII's birthday (including free drinks and canapés courtesy of Baker & McKenzie), to find out more about where things are going and, better still, how to use the site to maximum effect.
The programme is attached. First, the demonstration. Then…
In the chair, as in November 1999, Lord Justice Brooke, Chair and founding trustee of BAILII and past President of the Society for Computers and Law. He will set the scene and discuss briefly the development and funding of the services.
Then, Baroness Ashton of Upholland, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Constitutional Affairs will offer a swift summary of the Government's position on e-delivery of legal services
Next, The Hon Mr Justice Ronan Keane, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ireland and Carolyn Kirby, Chairman of the Law Society-Wales Committee and former President of the Law Society of England and Wales will say a few words from the viewpoints of Irish and Welsh users.
After that, there will a panel to field all and any issues raised by you relating to BAILII, access to the law, government attitudes to free access, whatever!
The evening will close with Professor Richard Susskind OBE, Chair of the Advisory Panel on Public Sector Information, giving the "inside track" on UK Government policy on making official materials available online
Serious stuff. As stated, the "cost" for attending the meeting in London is a minimum donation to BAILII of £15.00. Admission will be by ticket only and if you would like to attend, please complete the attached form or email caroline.gould@scl.org. Places will be allocated in order of receipt and tickets and maps will be sent to all delegates. If you have not received a ticket by Wednesday 27 October 2004 please contact Caroline Gould on 0117 9237 393 email: caroline.gould@scl.org. There will be a break after the BAILII demonstration for a glass of wine or water so if you can only attend the meeting please arrive by 18.30 hours
BAILII is most grateful to the partners of Baker and McKenzie for hosting this event and to the Society for Computers and Law (SCL), the British and Irish Legal Education Technology Association (BILETA) and the British and Irish Association of Law Librarians (BIALL) for their sponsorship.
