You are here: BAILII >> About BAILII >> Help >> How to browse a search result

BAILII can sort your search result by:

The default sort is by relevance. You can change the sort order on the Results Page or you can pre-select the sort order from the Multidatabase Search page.

Each document on a search result can be viewed with your search terms highlighted. Click on the "(highlight search terms)" link in the results list, e.g.

1. Adan, R (on the application of) v Secretary Of State For Department [1999] EWCA Civ 1948 (23 July 1999) Highlight search
terms [100%]
((1999) 96(33) LSG 30, [1999] 3 WLR 1274, [1999] 4 All ER 774, [1999] All ER (D) 858, [1999] COD 480, [1999] EWCA Civ 1948, [1999] INLR 362, [1999] Imm AR 521; From England and Wales Court of Appeal (Civil Division) Decisions; 95 KB)

When the highlighting function is enabled, click on the red arrow [Context] that is displayed on top of the document in the navigation bar, e.g.:

[Database Home Page] [Recent Decisions] [Context] [Download plain HTML] [Download RTF] [Help]

This will take you to the first occurrence of your search terms. Use the arrows next to each search term to move up or down through the document viewing each occurrence of your search terms.

Example of highlighted text:

The Children Act, embodying what I have described as a cardinal principle, represents the assessment made by Parliament of the division of responsibility which would best promote the interests of children within the overall care system.

* Note: If the highlighting function is enabled when you print/download a document, the search terms will appear in bold in the printed/downloaded document. If you do not wish this, then click on the document title rather than the (highlight terms) link.

To return from a document to the results list, use the Back button.
