MORE COURT JUDGMENTS ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB

The Court Service has made arrangements for all the substantive judgments of the Court of Appeal (Civil Division) and the Administrative Court to be published on the Internet website of the British and Irish Legal Information Institute (BAILII) within a maximum of three days after they have been released in an approved form.

The BAILII website can be found at www.bailii.org

This website now holds every judgment in these two categories published since the start of 2003. Further judgments will be posted there as soon as possible after they become available in an approved form.

During the next 12 months a much larger selection of the judgments of the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division) and of the other divisions of the High Court will also be published on this site.

David Gladwell, Head of the Civil Appeals Office, said today: "we are delighted that it is now possible to provide to people all over the world free public access to all the substantive judgments of the Court of Appeal as soon as they become available.

“We have made these arrangements with the trustees of BAILII for a two-year period, and I know that they are as keen as we are to make this experimental new service a great success."

Notes for Editors

1.     The British and Irish Legal Information Institute (BAILII) was incorporated as a charitable trust in December 2000.  Its main purpose is to provide free public access to the caselaw of the jurisdictions of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

2.     Its board of trustees, who represent all the jurisdictions BAILII exists to serve, include Lord Saville of Newdigate and Lord Justice Brooke.

3.     All press inquiries regarding BAILII to the Executive Director of BAILII, Joe Ury (Tel. +44 (0) 20 7862 5806; e-mail: joe.ury@sas.ac.uk).

4.     The Civil Division of the Court of Appeal publishes about 1,500 substantive judgments each year, and the Administrative Court about 1,000.  In the past, it has only been possible to provide free public access on the Internet to a small proportion of the judgments of these two courts.  The arrangements with the Court Service will enable BAILII to engage an extra member of staff to handle the greatly increased load.

5.     Lord Justice Brooke's speech at the April 2003 Commonwealth Law Conference entitled "Publishing the Courts: Judgments and Public Information on the Internet" can be accessed by a link from the BAILII site at www.bailii.org
